Mock Artist Lecture

October 5, 2023

For this poster project, I’ve chosen the Bauhaus Professor Moholy Nagy to create a mock poster inspired in his style. The poster promotes the opening of an arts institute called the New Bauhaus, now called the Institute of Design, located here in Chicago. There was an already existing poster created to promote the location, But I’ve created a what if scenario of a designer tasked to create a poster promoting Moholy’s Opening Lecture to the first students at his design school and had to take place in the year 1937. To recreate this poster, I’ve looked back at his designs for posters Moholy made for Bauhaus and looked at selected works done from the ‘20s to late ‘30s. Research material I’ve used for the project are shown in the book project called mo_st, comprising student works following design exercises that used to be instructed by Moholy, and the history page of New Bauhaus in the Institute of Design website.

This artist has been chosen due to his technique of meshing two mediums of communication into one, for this method is called “Phototype”. This technique combines both Photography and Typography together to what Moholy refers to as full visual communication.
